Jake Spiegel was born on December 25, 1884 in Brooklyn, New York.

He moved from Brooklyn to Norma, New Jersey with his family in 1890. Norma is an unincorporated community located within Pittsgrove Township in Salem County, New Jersey.

Jake was married twice. His first wife, Jennie Levin, died of tuberculosis at the age of 24. Shortly after the death of his first wife, Jake remarried. His second wife was Mary Opachinsky of Norma, New Jersey.

In addition to his son, Harry Spiegel, Jake's child from his first marriage, he had six additional children with Mary Opachinsky: Earl, Fischel ("Fred"), Florence, Reba, Edward, and Shirley.

Jake was a well-known civic and political leader is Norma and was sort of a "Jake" of all trades.

Jake Spiegel passed away on March 17, 1969 in Daytona Beach, Florida at the age of 84.
