When we think of our grandparents, Alfred and Ruth Stern, we think of: a happy marriage, coordinated outfits, The Sound of Music, The King Family, taking us to Horn & Hardart, Oliver, Friday night dinners at their house, talking to us from two phone extensions, buying us matching outfits on their trips to Miami, spending holidays together, working as extras in The Heartbreak Kid starring Cybil Shepard, telling them to "get a room" ...
On April, 19, 1997, I interviewed my grandparents, Alfred Stern & Ruth Kronheim Stern about their life as a young couple. Below are the digital recordings from that day.
Special Note: You can find more audio recordings on the Alfred Stern and Ruth Kronheim Stern pages where they talk about growing up and their lives prior to their marriage. All of the recordings will bring a smile to your face.
Ruth Kronheim married Alfred Stern on October 17, 1937 at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Ruth and Alfred had two daughters: Andrea Stern and Karen Stern Brenner-Stein.
Ruth and Alfred lived in Vineland, New Jersey most of their lives. When Alfred retired in 1980, they moved to Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.
While in college, I interviewed my grandfather about his life during the depression and wrote a paper on it. The paper, which includes the teaching assistant's comments, is below.
Because Alfred was a farmer, he was not drafted into the military in World War II. The country need farmers to feed America.
However, both Ruth and Alfred did serve their country during the war. They worked for the Aircraft Warning Service in Vineland, which was a part of the U.S. civil defense as airplane spotters. During the war, the Aircraft Warning Service, was created to keep watch for enemy planes entering American airspace. Alfred also worked as an air raid warden.

In 2001, Ruth and Alfred received a special gift from their children and grandchildren -- a computer!

Ruth and Alfred loved to travel. Each winter, during the farming off season, they would travel abroad and explore several countries. Before returning to their Vineland home, they would also spend several weeks in south Florida visiting with friends.
In 1986, Ruth and Alfred's former home in Vineland, New Jersey went up in flames.
